Floor Care After Sanding -- Keeping Your Finish Looking New
You've just had your floors sanded and polished. They look incredible. Here's how to keep them that way without overthinking it.
The First 7 Days
The polyurethane is still curing. During this time: walk in socks only (no shoes, no bare feet), no rugs or mats, no heavy furniture, no wet cleaning. After 7 days the finish is fully hardened and normal life resumes.
Daily Care
Sweep or vacuum with a soft floor attachment. That's it. Do this regularly and your floors will stay clean without any special products. A microfibre mop with a damp (not wet) cloth works for a deeper clean when needed.
What NOT to Use
This is the important part. Never use: vinegar, bleach, ammonia, steam mops, or any "all-purpose" floor cleaner. These strip the polyurethane finish. If you want a dedicated cleaner, use Bona Clean -- it's pH-neutral and designed for polyurethane floors.
Protecting the Finish
Felt pads under all furniture legs. No dragging furniture across the floor. Use a doormat at entries to catch grit (grit is what causes scratches, not shoes). Put breathable mats in high-traffic zones -- but not for the first 7 days.
Sunlight
UV light changes timber colour over time. This is natural and unavoidable. Use curtains or blinds during peak sun. Rotate rugs occasionally so the floor ages evenly.
When to Recoat
Most residential floors need a maintenance recoat every 7-10 years. A recoat is a light buff and one fresh coat of poly -- much cheaper and faster than a full sand. High-traffic hallways might need it sooner. You'll know it's time when the finish looks dull or worn in traffic areas.
